The Brain Hurricane tutoring program was introduced by Reed Howard. It was created for the benefit of students as it makes learning a fun process. At Brain Hurricane, the students are taught to solve curriculum related problems in interesting and innovative manner. Reed Howard who herself is from teaching background, did an extensive research while developing the curriculum for the students. The curriculum is so much interesting that it doesn’t allow the attention of students to drift away.
At Brain Hurricane, the students learn that for every problem there exist multiple solutions. Such approach not only helps the students to solve their curriculum related problems but also helps them to deal with real life problems. Here, stress is laid on practical knowledge and various movement activities like using innovative math, reading tasks are organized at the starting of the day. This helps to make the students active participants in the class. Similarly, at the end of each day, various skits are performed which are based on the lessons they have learnt that day.
Brain Hurricane contracted with the Center for Research in Educational Policy (CREP) for an analysis of the benefit of their training programs for students. CREP is a research body that conducts high quality educational researches to evaluate “what works” in schools across the nation. Brain Hurricane provided its personnel with its complete 2007-2008 database of the scores of the students in pre and posttest administrations of age-appropriate Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) assessments. On comparing the pre and posttest ITBS statements it was revealed that the students of Brain Hurricane had shown average gains of around 14%. They showed excellent improvements in Reading and Mathematics.
